Artist Statement:
"One week before the stay-at-home order was placed in March of 2020, I had a long phone conversation with a former professor about changes in my artistic direction. The timing was good. After this conversation, I developed a character that could stand in for my current emotional state and interactions with the world, interior, and exterior. Using old cartoon tropes such as bulging eyes, white gloves, and comical proportions, this new "vessel" could help me explore my inner world better. As this series continued, I introduced more themes and genres such as Magic Realism, symbolism, psychedelic 70's black-light posters, American tattoo art, and Renaissance portraiture. Also, artists like John Wilde, Gertrude Abercrombie, Philip Guston, and Hans Holbein seeped into my work. This series has been refreshing, new, and scary, as the path forward remains unknown. To me, this uncertainty in the process is the best part." -Zach Mory
