Up from down Home: A Family’s Journey North Exhibit by Jevoid Simmons

On exhibit in the gallery windows, Sugar Creek Folks by artist Jevoid Simmons. The prints of paintings are part of Simmons’ upcoming book, Up from down Home: A Family’s Journey North. The paintings were executed over a seven-year period with the last one completed in 2015, illustrating the extraordinary hardships and the life and death struggle faced by Black folks living in the South under Jim Crow.

In addition to painting, Simmons is a woodcarver and storyteller. His carvings are ongoing and capture family, friends, acquaintances and other characters from the past. The carvings are a part of a collection called Sugar Creek Folks.

Social Justice Sewing Circles with Melissa Blount

Join Melissa Blount, Evanston-bas­­­ed artist and activist and creator of the Black Lives Matter Witness Quilt, to produce a new collaborative quilt. The community is invited to two evenings of craft, activism and dialogue, remembering the names of women and girls who lost their lives to gun violence in Chicago.

The sewing circles will take place at 1100 Florence Ave. in Evanston. No sewing skills needed, just an RSVP as there are only 30 spaces each day. All ages welcome.

Artist Talk with Ben Blount

The public is invited Sunday, Feb. 26, 3-5 p.m. for a talk with Ben and his wife Melissa on everything from social justice, xenophia, book arts and more - it will be a dynamic talk. Ben will will discuss his art, Melissa and Ben will talk about on their work in social justice initiatives in Evanston. Ben is a founding board member of OPAL (Organization for Positive Action and Leadership). He is interested in equity issues in Evanston and how we as a community can affect change through political participation. Seats are limited, please register. 

Ben will also talk about the works on display at 1100 Florence in his show Recollection. Recollection examines the notions of race and culture we encounter growing up in the United States. Shared through reimagined learning tools and remembered narratives, this work explores how we collect these formative ideas about identity and commit them to memory. Ben Blount is a printer who uses books, posters and installations to explore notions of race and identity in America. Shaped by two decades of experience in design and advertising, his work draws on a common cultural language of objects, stories and experiences to draw attention to the differences between what we see, and how we are seen. With a range of contemporary influences from Dave Chappelle and Kara Walker to Mos Def and Amos Kennedy, Blount’s work is often provocative and topical. He has taught book arts courses at The Cleveland Institute of Art and Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago. A native Detroiter, he earned an MFA in Interdisciplinary Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago and currently lives in Evanston, IL.
